Echoes of kings and demigods, powerful sugarcane planters and the intrepid Captain James Cook drift across the Hawaiian archipelago. Now and then the Fire Goddess Pele erupts in raw fury from her home atop Kilauea, pouring her molten wrath into the sea in loud, hissing columns of steam. Arid moonscapes of lava tubes and craters surround her. While down by the sea, palm-packed beaches of black and white and even green sands face a blue surf filled with neon fish and coral. Vegetation is lush and verdant on the windward side of Hawaii, the 'Big Island.' There is endless sun and sand to the west. And along the northern slopes, farms and great plantations grow macadamia nuts, orchids, and the rich Kona coffee bean that permeates the air.Visit the Big Island of Hawaii with its legends of the Goddess Pele. You'll also call at Honolulu on Oahu, home of the famous Diamond Head volcano and the beaches of Waikiki. Explore Lahaina on mountainous Maui, cloaked in tropical rainforest and ringed by sapphire waters and more beaches than any other island. Three departures include a day on Kauai, the Garden Island, a heavenly eden of plunging waterfalls, lacy streams, canyons, and 50 miles of soft, white sands. The first and last sailings include a passage between Hawaii and North America. With Norwegian, you will be taken to the very fabric that bestows Hawaii's magic.
