Hana's
Beaches and Parks
Winter and spring bring Humpback Whales to Maui
waters, and there’s no better place to
view them than Hana’s beautiful beaches
and shorelines. Hana Beach County Park is right
in town and offers a spectacular view of the
ocean from Hana Bay. One of the most unusual
and magical beaches on Maui can be found just
west of the bay over the hill, and is known
as the Red Sand Beach. Crumbling cinder from
the cliff walls around this enclosed beach provides
the dark red sand, while a rock wall not far
off shore provides calm water for swimmers and
snorkelers.
Just a couple miles east on the Hana Highway
visitors can enjoy the splendor of Wainapanapa
State Park. This park has a black sand beach,
caves filled with fresh water, natural rock
bridges, and hiking trails. Take the road in
the other direction from Hana and find two more
fantastic beaches close by. Hawaiian history
claims a royal princess hid in these caves to
elude her would be captor. Koki Beach and Hamoa
Beach both have fine white sand and breath-taking
scenery.
Attractions
and Sites
Other sites in Hana town include Fagan Memorial
– a lava rock cross erected above town
in the rolling green pastures. Take a walk up
to the memorial and you will be rewarded with
a panorama of Hana town and the surrounding
area. Stop in the Hana Cultural Center to learn
about local culture and area history. There
are two historic churches in town that hold
service on Sundays. Wananalua Church was built
by missionaries in 1838 and is placed on the
National Register of Historic Places. The later
St. Mary's Catholic Church can be found across
the street on the Hana Highway.
Dining
and Shopping
For a bite to eat you can dine privately on
your lanai using your fully equipped kitchen,
or BBQ at the covered picnic area next to the
beach. Other dining options are available at
the Hotel Hana Maui or the Hana Ranch Restaurant,
both right in Hana town. the post office and
other shops are nearby.
In
Hana, much activity centers around the same
places as most American small towns –
the general store. Hana has two: the Hana Ranch
Store, and the infamous Hasegawa General Store.
Both stores are packed with sundries, groceries
and refreshments. Not only are they a great
place to stock up, they offer bulletin boards
where you will find the latest local information
posted, and they are also great places to people-watch!
Brilliant
orange sunrises, misty rainbows, fragrant exotic
Hawaiian flora, soft warm breezes, crashing
surf, and the gentle sound of palms rustling
in the breeze; Hana Maui is a sensuous place,
a place where one loses track of time, where
mystical days and tranquil nights simply unfold.
Hana is truly "the last Hawaiian place".
